Color outside the lines

Guess what?? I made my first true (or messy, should I call it?) mixed media piece! I finally put into use the gesso that I picked a couple of months a go… it’s not quite as brilliant when used with a stencil to build up texture and dimension, as is modelling paste (which is taking the card-making world by storm, largely thanks to my fabulous friend Debby, who does absolute magic with it), but it still works great! I did some stamping with alphabet stamps, and paired it with a die cut hot air balloon from K & Company. The rest is all about spray mists, gesso and direct-to-paper inking.

The size of the page is A5 (half of your regular A4 page, metric measurements). The cardstock which I worked on, was cut smaller and matted for extra sturdiness. Spraying can warp the paper quite significantly.
The stencil that I used with the gesso was made by cutting the diamond pattern in a piece of card. I had mine for a long time and honestly I don’t remember how it was made (shoot! it never happens but I swear it’s true) but there are plenty of dies, or electric die cutters which can aid you with it.
I took an old credit card and applied a thin layer of it, over the stencil, and the diamonds emerged when I lifted the card gently. Now, I was impatient as usual and I dried it with a heat gun. A word of advice - unless you you don’t mind an uneven look, I recommend leaving it to dry naturally, because heat makes gesso burst in tiny bubbles which dry instantly. I didn’t know it before but it didn’t bother since I was in the experimenting mood. Next time I think I’ll leave it aside to dry on its own and see how much difference it makes :)

I’m entering this little experiment of mine, into The Color Media Challenge in the Moxie Fab World. See you tomorrow for a new CASE Study and an extra surprise post later :)

  1. Iwona I am in disbelief in reading that this is your first mixed media piece. Wow…talk about mastery. It appears you have been doing this for years. The colors and texture are wonderful. Another home run!!
