You know what the theme for this event is (if you don’t, check it out HERE first) so let’s get down to business!
I usually look for the inspiration for my new project, on Pinterest. My boards hold plenty of files I’m saving for tackling later (don’t we all??)
Since I’ve been dealing with a creative stupor, and making some decisions regarding my future blogging (see my previous post), I’ve been finding it hard to commit to a single project I want to make. That is, until I hit my mixed media folder and recalled how much I enjoy looking at she-art. Well, some of it at least :)

Mixed media pieces by Paulette from Adventures in Fiber are among my favourites (see them on Pinterest). I’ve been looking at them countless times, thinking how lovely it would be to be able to create this kind of art as well. And so I finally gave it a go :)

Disclaimer #1 I’m aware of the fact that there is more than one common denominator between Paulette’s artwork and my inspired piece - I took the elements from hers that I fancied but I made the piece mine, I hope it shows!
Disclaimer #2 I have ZERO practical knowledge of mixed media, she-art and art journaling. I used what I used because either a) it felt right or b) this is what I have on hand :)

My girl sleeps under the patterned paper blanket (old Basic Grey What’s Up collection). I drew her first with a pencil, then coloured with Copics. The background was watercoloured with Inktense pencils and stamped with the background from Stampers Anonymous Papillon set, using Iced Spruce Distress Ink. The flowers and butterfly are K & Company ephemera. A more detailed step-by-step is a bit further below. Here are the Copic markers I used:
skin: E41/50/13/93/04, YR000/00, R01
hair: E07/17

The journaling along the edge of her hairline says “let her sleep for when she wakes she will move mountains”. I find it quite powerful.

Here’s how I made it! Please note that I’ve been working on this piece in-and-out all day and hence the less than ideal evening light towards the end of the slideshow. You can see the true colours on the photos above.

That’s it from me for now, you now should hop to Torico’s blog! Thanks for visiting, enjoy and good luck in the drawing!

Butterflies, mixed media and craft retreat aftermath

I haven’t yet had a chance to share any of the cards I made during the recent craft retreat with some crafty friends. Seeing as a few challenges fit the bill, I’m redeeming myself now with the two creations from the lot… there’s more coming! Hopefully soon enough, or I forget what I used on them :)
We were very lucky to share our craft supplies and I made sure I try as much as I could, in the limited time we had. Some companies I never played with before and it was tons of fun.

Both of the projects I’m entering into The Card Concept #7 - butterfly theme. When I don’t use a floral of some sort, I’d gladly put a butterfly on everything… both at the same time? I say, better yet!

This little card features the beautiful Patchwork Butterfly stamp from Darkroom Door. It was a hit among the ladies, apparently I wasn’t the only one falling for it! I’m quite tempted to get it myself, in fact I’m quite mesmerized by all Darkroom Door stamps, their quality is great and the designs are fresh and unique.
The other stamps that made it there are Tim Holtz / Stampers Anonymous French Collage (my oh my! another new favourite) which I stamped my background with, and Mama Elephant Fair Feathers for the sentiment. The banner was cut with Paper Smooches Flag Tags die, the foliage was cut in vellum with SSS Clustered Leaves, the butterfly watercoloured with Distress Inks. On the other hand, I have no idea where that patterned paper comes from 😛

Another piece that I want to show you today, is a little canvas - each of which was given to all of the girls at the retreat (thanks, Lyndal!) and we got busy turning them into miniature works of art. I think most, if not all of the finished ones were already linked to Virginia’s View challenge #2 since we were playing with stencils, so I figured I should jump on the bandwagon as well :)

I had fun experimenting with this one. What I did first is primed the surface with gesso, then added colour with Gelatos (OMG I so need them!) and blended the colours down with a baby wipe. Then I grabbed one of the hollyhock stencil from Donna Downey Poppies and Peonies collection and applied on using embossing paste. Once dry, I sponged various Distress Inks over the raised parts and flicked ink mists in two tones over the whole piece. The sentiment from Tim Holtz City Central set was stamped with archival ink on tissue paper and I applied gesso generously over it, which muted the colours and gave it a nice battered look. The butterfly is Chrissy from SSS and it was double cut in both patterned paper and vellum, then topped with a sequin.

Here are the challenges again, feel free to click on the graphics to be taken to the respective sites. I’m also linking the canvas to the Styling With Stencils Challenge in the Moxie Fab World.

See you again tomorrow :)

November Beautiful World Tour

ETA: I’m sorry for the delay, I accidentally saved the post, instead of scheduling it… blame it on my tired brain… duh!

Hello and welcome to November Flourishes Beautiful World Tour! I hope you’ll join us for the blog hop and get inspired by the talented girls from all over the globe. Leave a comment on every stop, and you could WIN A FREE FLOURISHES STAMP SET! You’ve got until Nov 30tht for your chance to win.

You should have arrived here from Meredith’s blog, you can also join us from the beginning at the Flourishes Blog.

This month our hostess is Bridget and she challenged us to Off The Page. I made a mixed media decoration, to put on a mantle or hang on the wall. I used my favourite Santa, I Believe stamp set, on a small sized stretched canvas. I used a Silhouette - cut template and Wendy Vecchi silver embossing paste, to do the textured background, and then another Silhouette cut: a snowflake frame (paired with a large Spellbinders circle), to put the Santa face on.

I added some life to Santa’s cheeks, by giving it some colour in light pink Copic marker (E93). The sentiment has been stamped in black pigment ink, on a piece of vellum. I finished with a big satin bow topped with a matching colour flower. Oh, and lots of sparkly gems :)

Thanks for taking time to visit me here in Australia, it’s time to grab your passports and board Flourishes Flight, your next and last destination is… Bridget’s blog!

Color outside the lines

Guess what?? I made my first true (or messy, should I call it?) mixed media piece! I finally put into use the gesso that I picked a couple of months a go… it’s not quite as brilliant when used with a stencil to build up texture and dimension, as is modelling paste (which is taking the card-making world by storm, largely thanks to my fabulous friend Debby, who does absolute magic with it), but it still works great! I did some stamping with alphabet stamps, and paired it with a die cut hot air balloon from K & Company. The rest is all about spray mists, gesso and direct-to-paper inking.

The size of the page is A5 (half of your regular A4 page, metric measurements). The cardstock which I worked on, was cut smaller and matted for extra sturdiness. Spraying can warp the paper quite significantly.
The stencil that I used with the gesso was made by cutting the diamond pattern in a piece of card. I had mine for a long time and honestly I don’t remember how it was made (shoot! it never happens but I swear it’s true) but there are plenty of dies, or electric die cutters which can aid you with it.
I took an old credit card and applied a thin layer of it, over the stencil, and the diamonds emerged when I lifted the card gently. Now, I was impatient as usual and I dried it with a heat gun. A word of advice - unless you you don’t mind an uneven look, I recommend leaving it to dry naturally, because heat makes gesso burst in tiny bubbles which dry instantly. I didn’t know it before but it didn’t bother since I was in the experimenting mood. Next time I think I’ll leave it aside to dry on its own and see how much difference it makes :)

I’m entering this little experiment of mine, into The Color Media Challenge in the Moxie Fab World. See you tomorrow for a new CASE Study and an extra surprise post later :)

Cutie pie, a canvas frame

So I was itching to make another canvas of Chuplet (hey, she’s such a “big sister” now that it doesn’t seem like a fitting name any more! ) . I took that photo with a camera phone which left me wishing for a better quality but she looks so adorable here that I couldn’t resist giving it some paper pampering :)
I dressed up the canvas in all sorts of stuff, including a Kaisercraft DP base (Homemade collection) and die cuts (Sweet Pea collection), PTI and Spellbinders dies, Prima chippie buttons and Want 2 Scrap bling.

I haven’t touched Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms for a long time, it was fun to roll some roses again :)
(the two smallest blooms are store bought)
